Perro Verde Tobasiche is an artisanal mezcal from Oaxaca made from wild Tobasiche agave, a variety that takes close to two decades to mature. Produced in small, numbered batches and bottled at 42% ABV, it won Double Gold and Best in Class at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Perro Verde, Spanish for green dog, takes its name from the idea of something rarer than rare, and the brand was developed with Tradición Chagoya, a family with more than 120 years of mezcal-making experience. The agave is roasted in earthen pit ovens, milled by hand with wooden mallets, fermented in wooden vats and distilled in copper and clay stills, a slow, traditional process that brings out the character of the wild plant.
On the nose come smoke and spice with salty and tropical fruit notes, alongside lime, jasmine green tea, bamboo shoots and wet soil. The palate is fruity and delicate, with a charred, oily quality, water chestnut, lime and pepper, and a long finish. Tastings.com awarded it 93 points and a Gold Medal.
The heavy bottle is embossed with the Perro Verde name and wears a gold label marked Tobasiche, and it is presented in a gift box illustrated with the brand's mystical artwork. It is an exceptional bottle for any mezcal lover.
