Pikesville Straight Rye is a high-proof, super-premium straight rye from Heaven Hill, drawn from specially selected barrels aged at least six years and bottled at 110 proof (55% ABV).
Prohibition shuttered most of the once-booming Maryland rye industry, but Pikesville, produced since the 1890s, re-emerged in 1936 and became the lone brand to keep that style alive. Having stored away extra-aged barrels, Heaven Hill reclaims the past with this bold Kentucky-made revival, built on a mash bill of 51% rye, 39% corn and 10% malted barley and aged six years in new charred oak.
Aromas of dark cocoa, clove, toasted oak and vanilla bean lead to flavors of rye spice, honey, brown sugar, dried cherry and cinnamon, with a thick, oily mouthfeel and deep grain character. The long, warming finish brings hints of mint, pepper and leather.
It is a favorite of bartenders and rye lovers, and a fine gift.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
Maryland rye was historically known for a slightly sweeter, rounder style than the spicier Pennsylvania ryes.
Extra age and high proof give Pikesville a depth that stands up beautifully in stirred cocktails.
A few drops of water open up the cocoa and dried cherry.
Its thick, oily texture makes it especially satisfying when sipped neat.
