Pinhook Bourbon Vertical Series Batch #2654 Reserve is the 2024 release of Pinhook's Vertical Series, the 9-year-old entry, a small batch straight bourbon bottled at cask strength of 115 proof (57.5% ABV).
Pinhook takes its name from pinhooking, the horse-racing practice of buying young thoroughbreds to raise and sell. Its Bourbon Vertical Series follows a single group of 1,350 high-rye barrels distilled at MGP, with a mash of 75% corn, 20.5% rye and 4.5% malted barley, releasing them year by year so you can taste how bourbon changes with age. Pinhook has no fixed flavour profile or proof, only an ethos to produce the best whiskey every vintage. Rather than standardising one proof across the vintage, Pinhook sets aside specific small batches, such as Batch #2654, to showcase the sweet spot of selected barrels.
Nine years of patient warehouse aging have deepened the spirit, introducing rich oak that complements the sweet and spicy high-rye mash bill.
A collector's release for anyone following the Vertical Series, it makes a fine gift.
Sip it neat, then add a few drops of water.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
