Pinhook Tiz Rye Time 5 Year is the second release in Pinhook's Vertical Series, a five-year-old straight rye bottled at 103 proof (51.5% ABV).
The Vertical Series is a unique opportunity to follow a single group of 450 MGP rye barrels as they age from four to twelve years and experience the arc of flavors across a nine-year journey. Each spring Pinhook blends a new batch of roughly 50 of those barrels and sets a proof to maximize the balance and complexity of the whiskey at that age. The mash bill is 95% rye and 5% malted barley, and the barrels are aged at Castle & Key in Frankfort, Kentucky.
Every year Pinhook releases a new bourbon and rye, each connected to a promising young thoroughbred, and blends and proofs each release to be as unique as the horse on the label. This release followed the inaugural four-year in 2020, with an extra year of age and six more proof points.
It is a fruit-forward rye, layered with nuanced sweet notes. The extra year amplifies the fruit of the rye, especially on the nose, while the back end picks up spicier notes of pepper and caraway and slightly sweet, slightly spicy nutmeg and mace, in a well-balanced sip with clearly defined flavors.
