Planteray Stiggins' Fancy Pineapple, formerly sold as Plantation Pineapple, is a rum made from a slow infusion of real Victoria pineapple in Barbados and Jamaica rums, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Stiggins' Fancy is a tribute to the Charles Dickens character Reverend Stiggins, who, in The Pickwick Papers, preached temperance between nips of his beloved pineapple rum. Inspired by his favorite tipple, Alexandre Gabriel and the Planteray team, owned by Maison Ferrand, set out to re-invent a piece of rum history. Once a rare delicacy, it is now known as a bartender's handshake around the world.
It starts with the very small but very tasty Victoria pineapple, chosen after testing dozens of varieties for its sweetness and flavor, and every one is still cut by hand. The pineapple barks are infused and redistilled in Planteray 3 Stars white rum, while the sweet flesh of the fruit is immersed in Planteray Original Dark rum. The distillate and the fruit infusion are then blended together, with no artificial pineapple flavor.
The result is rich, smooth and fruity: real pineapple over the depth of the dark rum, with the right amount of sweetness and none of the artificial taste of many flavored rums. It was named Best Flavored Rum with 96 points at the 2023 Ultimate Spirits Challenge.
It is delightful in a freshly shaken Daiquiri, transforms tiki drinks such as the Mai Tai or a Jungle Bird, and is easy to enjoy on the rocks or with soda.
