Plymouth Gin Navy Strength is the extra-strength version of Plymouth Gin Original, bottled at 114 proof (57% ABV) at the historic Plymouth distillery in southwest England, where gin has been made since 1793.
Gin had to be Navy Strength because it was stored next to the gunpowder below deck: a lower strength like today's Original would ruin the gunpowder if it leaked, while gin at 57% would still let it ignite. By 1850, Coates & Co, the makers of Plymouth Gin, supplied over 1,000 casks of Navy Strength gin to the Royal Navy each year, and the Royal Navy created the Gimlet with Plymouth Gin and lime cordial. Grain spirit is distilled with water from Dartmoor National Park and seven time-honoured botanicals: juniper, coriander seed, orange and lemon peel, green cardamom, angelica root and orris root.
A heady aroma powered by the seven botanicals leads to an intense, juniper-rich palate with citrus and spice. A little muscle goes a long way, and a splash of water reveals the classic Plymouth character.
The ship-and-monk label makes it a classic gift for gin lovers.
