Puncher's Chance The Left Cross is a limited 14-year-old straight bourbon, aged in new American oak and then finished for two to six months in freshly emptied casks that held 12-year-old Jamaican rum. Made from a mash bill of 84% corn, 8% rye and 8% malted barley, it is bottled at 96 proof, and just 70 barrels were released.
Puncher's Chance takes its boxing theme from the idea that every fighter has a chance, and The Left Cross is named for one of the sport's knockout punches. The Jamaican rum finish brings that island's famous funk to a long-matured bourbon, adding brown sugar, ripe banana and sweet baking spice.
Whisky Advocate scored it 92 points, finding cinnamon, overripe banana and s'mores on the nose, dark chocolate, cinnamon and roasted coffee on the palate, and a finish of dark chocolate and glazed fruit tart. Others note caramel, molasses, raisins and rum cake, with leather and rye spice on the finish.
The tiger-emblazoned bottle makes it a fun, characterful gift for bourbon and rum lovers alike.
Enjoy it neat to appreciate how the rum and bourbon play together.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
