Purasangre Extra Añejo is a 100% agave tequila aged five years in oak, bottled at 40% ABV.
Purasangre, meaning pure blood, is named for the thoroughbred horse, and its tall, elegant bottle carries a black horse emblem. Five years in the barrel, well beyond the three-year minimum for an extra añejo, give it a dense, heavy body and a dark topaz colour with copper tones.
The nose brings ripe agave, creamy old-wood aromas, tobacco and caramel. On the palate come dried fruits and vanilla, with a touch of cinnamon and black pepper spice.
The striking bottle with its wax seal makes it a handsome gift for tequila lovers.
Sip it neat from a snifter, as you would a fine cognac.
Extra añejo is the most mature category of tequila, created in 2006 for tequilas aged more than three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres. The long rest softens the agave's natural pepper and brings out caramel, vanilla and dried fruit, which is why extra añejos are usually enjoyed neat, like a fine cognac or whisky.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
