RD One Small Batch Finished with French Oak is a Kentucky straight bourbon from RD1 Spirits in Lexington, aged at least four years in new American oak and then finished with toasted French oak staves, bottled at 101 proof (50.5% ABV).
RD1 distils in Kentucky using 100% copper equipment, from 100% Kentucky corn and local limestone well water in a sour mash of 70% corn, 21% rye and 9% malted barley, non-chill filtered. For this expression, oak from Central France is seasoned two to three years in Northern California, toasted, and placed in the barrel as staves.
The nose leans towards orange peel, rye spice and chocolate. Caramel leads the palate, backed by dark cherry, sweet oak, graham cracker and marshmallow, and the finish dries to oak with dark chocolate, dark raspberry and a hint of smoke.
Winner of Gold at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, presented in RD1's custom bottle etched with Lexington's horse-farm fences, it makes a fine gift.
Try it neat, on the rocks or in an old fashioned.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
