Redwood Empire Van Duzen is a small-lot straight rye whiskey from Northern California, made grain to glass with a significant share of malted barley in its mash bill and bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV).
Redwood Empire's Small Lot Series continues its spirit of experimentation, applying its hard-won house style to products with a specific focus, and this straight rye is in a league of its own. It is named after the Van Duzen River, a tributary of the Eel River, paying homage to the pioneering spirit of Northern California's explorers and naturalists. Redwood Empire distils in Sonoma County, California, in a region that stretches from San Francisco to Humboldt Bay and on to the Oregon border, home to majestic coastal redwoods, some more than 350 feet high and 2,000 years old. Ageing its barrels in the temperate climate of the Northern California coast allows a slow, even extraction of flavour, producing whiskey of balance and complexity.
With a high malt content, Van Duzen pushes the boundaries of traditional rye whiskey, adding a rich, malty depth beneath its spice.
A rare small-lot rye, it makes a fine gift for rye explorers.
Sip it neat, or use it in a classic rye cocktail.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
