Louis XIII is Rémy Martin's most prestigious blend, and the Magnum is the format for the table that wants a centerpiece. It holds 1.75 liters of cognac drawn entirely from Grande Champagne, the first cru of the Cognac region, in a numbered, handcrafted crystal decanter.

Rémy Martin was founded in 1724 and is based in the town of Cognac. The Louis XIII name goes back to 1874, when Paul-Émile Rémy Martin registered the brand for the house's finest blend, and the decanter that holds it is based on a sixteenth-century flask said to have been found on the battlefield of Jarnac. Four generations of cellar masters have since guarded the blend, which is why the house presents each release as a legacy rather than a vintage.

Each bottling is a blend of up to 1,200 eaux-de-vie, all from Grande Champagne, aged slowly in oak. Each decanter is made by skilled artisans at a European crystal house, individually numbered, and finished with a gold-toned neck and a distinctive pattern of spikes on each side. Bottled at 40% ABV in a signature red display case.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: A dense opening of floral notes and candied fruit, followed by hints of spice.
  • Palate: Jasmine and passion fruit, with ginger and nutmeg, then rose and iris alongside fig and prune, supported by sandalwood and honey.
  • Finish: Very long; the house says the aromas persist for more than an hour on the palate.

Louis XIII is made to be shared at an occasion worth marking. Pour it neat in a small tulip glass at room temperature and give it time; a few drops of water can open the floral notes. It pairs well with a long evening, good company and a fine cigar, and the numbered decanter and red display case make it a statement gift.
