Rey Campero Mexicano is a joven mezcal artesanal from Candelaria Yegolé, Oaxaca, made from maguey mexicano (Agave rhodacantha) and bottled at 48.5% ABV.

Maguey mexicano, as Agave rhodacantha is commonly known in Oaxaca, is one of the scarcest agaves for making mezcal, taking eight, ten or more years to mature, and it is harvested from pine and oak forests at high altitude. Rey Campero, meaning King of the Countryside, is made by Rómulo Sánchez Parada, who learned from his father and grandfather in a tiny village of about 150 people in the mountains of southern Oaxaca.

The nose brings vanilla bean, sweet tea, cayenne and pine nuts, and the palate offers smoked cedar, dried grass and espresso: an authentic, approachable mezcal with a classic herbal character.

A family-made mezcal from a remote village, it makes a fine gift for mezcal explorers.

Sip it slowly from a copita at room temperature.

Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.

Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
