Rhum J.M Fumée Volcanique is part of the Martinique distillery's Atelier series: a golden rhum agricole aged in heavily charred ex-bourbon barrels for a smooth, smoky profile, bottled at 49% ABV (98 proof) in a 700ml bottle.
The Atelier series connects the influence of the cask to the geography of Martinique itself, and Fumée Volcanique, volcanic smoke, takes its name from the charred barrels, a nod to the island's volcanic landscape. The rhum is made from fresh sugarcane juice, creole column distilled, and aged for one to two years in toasted, heavily charred ex-bourbon oak barrels, then bottled without any adulteration.
Rhum J.M describes notes of salted butter caramel, lime and honey enhanced with smoky notes. The nose is spicy and layered with fruit: maple syrup, black pepper, red apple and cinnamon, with earthy-mineral notes, pear and a bright touch of cane. On the palate, a taste of char melds with toasty caramel, almond and coconut, and the grassy agricole character keeps it lively.
Smooth and smoky, a rhum that bridges agricole and the world of smoky spirits.
Aged rum is one of the most diverse spirits in the world, shaped by the sugarcane, the still and the warm climates where it matures, which speed up the interaction between spirit and wood.
