Rosaluna Mezcal Joven is a small-batch, additive-free 100% Espadín mezcal from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, made with just three ingredients, 8-year-old agave, water and a lot of love, and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Rosaluna is produced in Santiago Matatlán, the world capital of mezcal, by siblings JJ and Frida Méndez León Jiménez, whose family has been crafting mezcal for over six generations in the hills of Oaxaca. The brand, co-founded by Nate Brown and Terry Lee and backed by a female-led team, is designed to get you hooked on the magic of mezcal. The agave is cooked in traditional underground pits for a smooth, earthy profile with balanced smoke.
Bright and brilliant, it offers complex, layered notes of citrus, tropical fruit, pineapple and pear, with roasted agave hearts and their caramel notes leading the way and spices like ginger and cinnamon woven throughout. Look out for a silky smooth finish and just a hint of agave smoke.
For the mezcal newbie, the mezcal connoisseur and everyone in between.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
