Sababa Mezcal Artesanal is a joven mezcal from Oaxaca made from Agave angustifolia, known as espadín, and bottled at 45% ABV in a hand-painted ceramic bottle shaped like an owl.
It is double distilled in traditional stills by maestro mezcalero Francisco de los Ángeles, using agave gathered from several regions of Oaxaca, including Matatlán, Santa Ana del Río, San Juan del Río and Reforma Yautepec. The plants take up to eight years to reach maturity before they are harvested.
Blending agave from different valleys and mountains of Oaxaca brings together a range of soils and altitudes in one bottle.
The colourful owl bottle, painted in the style of Mexican folk art, makes it a show-stopping gift and a keepsake once empty.
Sip it slowly from a copita, or use it in a smoky cocktail.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
