Sagamore Spirit Double Oak is a Maryland-style straight rye aged four to five years in high-char new American oak and then finished for 18 months in toasted wave-stave barrels, bottled at 96.6 proof (48.3% ABV).
The increased surface area of the low-char, medium-plus-toast wave staves imparts caramel, toffee, hazelnut and toasted coconut. Sagamore's classic Maryland-style rye is reimagined through this ageing process, then proofed with limestone-filtered water from its spring house, built in 1909.
The palate is smooth caramel and rich toasted coconut, with nutty hazelnut and pecan melding with vanilla and caramel, over baking spice and dried orange peel.
A shining example of old meeting new, it makes a fine gift for rye lovers.
Enjoy it neat or in a Manhattan.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
Rye whiskey is made from a mash rich in rye grain, which gives a spicier, drier character than bourbon.
A straight whiskey must be aged at least two years in new charred oak containers, with nothing added but water.
Wave staves have a rippled inner surface, which increases the contact between whiskey and wood during the finish.
Toasting oak at a low heat, rather than charring it, draws out sweeter wood sugars such as vanilla and caramel.
