Santa Teresa 1796 is a single-estate Venezuelan rum from Hacienda Santa Teresa in the Aragua Valley, triple aged by the artisanal solera method and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Hacienda Santa Teresa was founded in 1796 and is Venezuela's oldest rum producer; the Vollmer family has made rum there since 1830, across five generations. To mark the hacienda's bicentennial in 1996, Alberto Vollmer Herrera, of the fourth generation, challenged the company to create a rum that drew on everything it had learned in its first 200 years. The result was the world's first super-premium rum made using the solera method. The rum is a blend aged up to 35 years in bourbon oak barrels, with fermentation, distillation and blending all done on the estate using its own sugarcane and natural water, and every bottle is wax sealed by hand.
Surprisingly dry yet smooth and balanced, this amber rum opens with a fruity aroma and notes of wood, followed by vanilla, cinnamon, dark chocolate, hints of honey and a peppery finish.
The hand-sealed bottle with its estate label makes it a handsome gift.
Aged rum is one of the most diverse spirits in the world, shaped by the sugarcane, the still and the warm climates where it matures, which speed up the interaction between spirit and wood.
The solera method blends younger and older rums over time, building consistency and depth.
A dry finish sets it apart from sweeter aged rums.
Serve it neat in a tulip glass to enjoy the aroma.
A single large ice cube softens it for slow sipping.
It makes an excellent rum Old Fashioned with a touch of demerara syrup and bitters.
Pair it with a fine cigar for a classic after-dinner ritual.
