Sazerac Rye is the one and only New Orleans original, a straight rye whiskey from Buffalo Trace that symbolizes the tradition and history of New Orleans, bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).
Rye whiskey dates back to the 1800s in New Orleans, when saloons, veiled as coffee houses, began lining the streets. At the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street, local patrons were served toddies made with rye whiskey and Peychaud's Bitters. The libation became known as the Sazerac, America's first branded cocktail, and this is the whiskey that started it all.
Made from Buffalo Trace's rye mash bill, which includes corn alongside the rye, Sazerac Rye has long been an approachable rye, with many bourbon-like qualities and a minty, spicy rye edge.
Expect citrus peel, vanilla and clove on the nose, with black pepper, toffee and dried fruit on the palate and a warming finish of spice, anise and mint.
It is made for the Sazerac cocktail: rinse a chilled glass with absinthe, stir the rye with a sugar cube and Peychaud's Bitters, and garnish with a lemon peel. It is equally at home in a Manhattan, a Vieux Carré or simply on the rocks.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
