Se Busca Joven is an artisanal mezcal made from 100% Espadín in San Juan del Río, Oaxaca, by maestros mezcaleros Rodolfo and Mary López Sosa, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Se Busca means "wanted" and is a tribute to the brave women of the Mexican Revolution, the Adelitas and Soldaderas, who stood shoulder to shoulder with men in battle; as unapologetic as the mezcal, they were the outlaws of their time. It is distilled at the family-owned López Sosa palenque, which has made mezcal artisanally for more than 50 years. It earned a Gold Medal and 94 points from the Beverage Tasting Institute in 2023 and 93 points and a Publisher's Pick from Tasting Panel.
Cooked agave and mesquite lead the nose, followed by a palate of nuts, fruit and green vegetables with bright herbal and citrus notes, landing in a sweet, weighted finish with a mellow spicy kick.
The wanted-poster label makes it a bold gift.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
