Sextro Rye Purple Label, the Patriot Edition, is a high-proof rye whiskey from Iowa Legendary Rye, bottled at 60.6% ABV, or 121.2 proof.
The Sextro name comes from Lorine Sextro, the granddaughter of an Iowa bootlegger, whose family recipe from the Prohibition era inspired the whiskey. Iowa Legendary Rye distils in a 1920s-style copper pot still and sources its ingredients from Carroll and Crawford counties in western Iowa, the heart of the region's famous bootlegging history.
At over 120 proof, the Purple Label is the boldest bottling in the Sextro range, built for those who enjoy rye's characteristic spice at full strength. A few drops of water will open up the grain and oak.
The handsome bottle with its purple label and portrait is a great gift for rye lovers and collectors of American craft whiskey.
Taste it neat first, then with a splash of water, or use it to build a robust Manhattan.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
Rye was one of America's most popular whiskeys before Prohibition, and during the dry years western Iowa, Carroll County in particular, became known for its bootleg rye. Craft distillers in the region are reviving that heritage today with full-flavoured rye recipes. At this strength Sextro Purple Label also shines in stirred cocktails, where it holds its own against vermouth and bitters and keeps its spice even with dilution.
