Sextro Rye Red Label is an authentic Prohibition rye from Carroll County, Iowa, distilled from 100% rye grain using a 1931 bootlegger's recipe and aged at least 18 months, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
The recipe was created by grandmother and clandestine bootlegger Lorine Sextro on a small Iowa farm during Prohibition, and handed down from generation to generation. Legend had it the Sextros buried a still and 15 barrels to avoid federal agents. Today Sextro Rye is cooked and aged at Iowa Legendary Rye's distillery in Carroll County, small-batch distilled in Prohibition-era replica 26-gallon stills and aged in 15-gallon Minnesota white oak barrels exposed to all seasons. Every bottle is handmade, hand bottled and hand labeled.
Aged to a high level of smoothness in mature white oak, it balances the rye's natural sweetness and robust spice with caramel, vanilla and a subtle earthiness.
The vintage portrait label makes it a great gift for history buffs.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
Small barrels give more wood contact, speeding maturation.
Iowa has a proud rye-farming and bootlegging history.
A splash of water opens up the caramel notes.
It pairs with smoked ham, pork chops or apple pie.
It is a great gift for Prohibition-era history fans.
