Shinobu 10 Year Old Lightly Peated is the first lightly peated 10-year expression from the samurai-inspired Shinobu whisky, a pure malt bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV).
It begins with nothing but malted barley. Nine years in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks are followed by another year in prized Japanese Mizunara oak, for a rich and varied complexity well rounded by elegant notes of wood and peat. The whisky is finished in Japan with the pristine snowmelt waters of Niigata.
Honey aromas lead into gentle charcoal, coffee and vanilla on the palate, and a smooth, salted caramel finish completes this lightly peated pure malt.
Presented in its striking samurai box, it makes a handsome gift.
Japanese whisky has earned a worldwide reputation for balance and precision, and limited releases from its historic distilleries are among the most sought-after bottles for collectors.
Mizunara is a rare Japanese oak, slow-growing and hard to work into casks, prized for the sandalwood, coconut and incense notes it gives whisky.
Pure malt is a Japanese term for a blend of malt whiskies without any grain whisky.
A light touch of peat adds a gentle smokiness that frames the honey and vanilla rather than dominating them.
Ex-bourbon casks give vanilla and soft fruit, while ex-sherry casks add richness and dried fruit, a balance the Mizunara year then deepens.
At 43%, it is easy to sip neat and still has the body for a highball.
