Siete Misterios Tobalá is an artisanal joven mezcal from Sola de Vega in Oaxaca, made from the wild Tobalá agave by mezcalero Eleuterio Ogarrio. Hand milled and distilled in clay pots, it is bottled at 49.5% ABV.
Tobalá is one of the most prized wild agaves in Mexico. The plant is small, grows at altitude in rocky soil and yields very little, so a mezcal made from it is a rare and special release. Siete Misterios, meaning seven mysteries, works with individual mezcaleros to bottle traditional, small-batch mezcals, and this Tobalá is crafted the old way: roasted in an earthen pit, crushed by hand and distilled in clay pots, a method that gives mezcal an especially rich, earthy texture.
The mezcal is broad and full-flavoured, with a character that moves around the palate. Cigar ash, canned peaches and crème brûlée appear on the nose and palate, with the gentle smoke of the pit roast and the sweetness for which Tobalá is known.
The tall bottle carries Siete Misterios' bold black-and-white agave illustration with an orange band naming the agave and the producer. It is a beautiful bottle for a mezcal enthusiast and a fine introduction to wild agave.
Because Tobalá is so scarce, every batch is limited, making each bottle a rare find.
