Singani 63 is Bolivia's national spirit, an unaged brandy distilled high in the Andes from Muscat of Alexandria grapes, brought to the United States by filmmaker Steven Soderbergh and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Singani is the roughly 500-year-old national spirit of Bolivia. In 2007, while shooting Che, Soderbergh was handed a bottle of Casa Real's black label by his Bolivian casting director and was hooked for life. Finding it unavailable in the US, he partnered with Casa Real, Bolivia's leading singani producer, secured an import license, and launched his own label, Singani 63, named for the year he was born. It became the first Bolivian singani in the US, and after an eight-year effort, the TTB officially recognized Bolivian singani as a unique type of brandy and a distinctive product of Bolivia.
Singani holds a designation of origin requiring that its grapes grow at high altitude within its historic home in the Bolivian Andes; Singani 63's Muscat of Alexandria grapes grow at about 5,200 feet, where warm days and cool nights build thick, flavorful skins. It is distilled in French copper stills in a process inspired by Cognac and rested a minimum of eight months, but never aged in wood.
Impeccably clean and undeniably mixable, it is crisp with fruity, floral Muscat notes, sippable on its own yet built for cocktails.
Bolivia's favorite cocktail is the Chuflay, singani with ginger ale and lemon, like a Bolivian Mule. Its clean, pure flavor also shines in place of vodka, gin or pisco in a sour or a spritz.
