Solarum Extra Añejo Cristalino 24K Gold is a luxury tequila with edible 24-karat gold flakes floating in the clear spirit and an LED light built into the base of the bottle. Aged in American white oak and then filtered to remove the amber colour of ageing, it is bottled at 40% ABV.
Cristalino tequila combines the depth of aged tequila with the clarity of a blanco: after ageing, the spirit is filtered through charcoal to strip out the colour while keeping much of the flavour and aroma. Solarum adds a spectacular finishing touch with suspended gold flakes, lit from below by the illuminated base.
The filtration softens the wood tannins, giving a smooth, approachable tequila with gentle oak sweetness over the agave.
Presented in a deep blue gift box marked 24K, it is designed for celebrations and makes a dazzling gift or centrepiece.
Turn on the base light, give the bottle a gentle swirl and watch the gold dance before pouring.
Extra añejo is the most mature category of tequila, created in 2006 for tequilas aged more than three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres. The long rest softens the agave's natural pepper and brings out caramel, vanilla and dried fruit, which is why extra añejos are usually enjoyed neat, like a fine cognac or whisky.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
