Spirit of Hven Organic Gin is a handcrafted Swedish island gin from Spirit of Hven Backafallsbyn, made from organic wheat spirit, pot distilled with botanicals and oak matured, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Spirit of Hven is a distillery on the small Swedish island of Hven, led by distiller Henric Molin, whose spirits include aquavit as well as gin. Its laboratory-flask bottle with dripping wax seal has made the organic gin instantly recognizable.
The gin starts with organic wheat spirit. The botanicals, including juniper, grains of paradise, citrus, Sichuan pepper, aniseed and guinea pepper, are infused in the grain spirit for 24 hours and then distilled in copper pot stills. The gin is then oak matured, which adds a soft background of vanilla and spice.
Juniper leads, backed by warm pepper and spice from grains of paradise and Sichuan and guinea pepper, a lift of citrus and anise, and a gentle vanilla roundness from the oak.
It makes a characterful Gin & Tonic with an orange twist, a spiced Martini or a Negroni. The flask-shaped bottle makes a striking gift. The warm pepper and gentle oak also suit a Martinez with sweet vermouth, and a slice of fresh ginger or a strip of grapefruit peel in a Gin & Tonic brings out the spice. Serve it well chilled to let the citrus shine.
