St. George Green Chile Vodka is a pepper-flavored vodka from St. George Spirits in Alameda, California, made with five California-grown peppers plus lime peel and cilantro, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
St. George Spirits, established in 1982 by eau de vie pioneer Jörg Rupf and today led by makers including Lance Winters and Dave Smith, works out of Alameda on San Francisco Bay, where its range spans gins, whiskeys, brandies and three vodkas: All Purpose, California Citrus and Green Chile. Its Green Chile Vodka celebrates the kaleidoscope of flavor found in fresh sweet and hot peppers, and it was made in the Golden State from California jalapeños, habaneros, serranos and bell peppers.
The vodka starts with a neutral spirit made from non-GMO grain. Jalapeños are distilled with the base spirit, the spirit is also run through fresh cilantro, and serrano, habanero and red and yellow bell peppers are infused separately and blended with the jalapeño-lime distillate. The result is pure, fresh pepper flavor without too much spice.
Vibrant and vegetal, it opens with cilantro, then ripe green pepper and a hint of lime, with subtle sweetness and a light touch of heat on the finish. It has an invigorating snap of heat and a seductively smooth mouthfeel, layering sweet, spicy and savory notes with impeccable balance.
It makes an outstanding Bloody Mary, a Moscow Mule with a kick, or a Green Chile Gimlet with fresh lime. It also brightens a Michelada or a spicy vodka soda.
