Stauning Smoke is a gently smoked Danish single malt whisky, made with local barley kilned over heather and peat and bottled at 47% ABV.
Stauning sits on the west coast of Denmark facing the North Sea, where in 2005 nine friends set up two small pot stills in an old butchery to learn the craft of whisky. The distillery uses 100% floor-malted local barley, kiln-dried over locally harvested heather and peat, and double distils it in small direct-fired pot stills before ageing it in first-fill wine and spirits casks.
This approach creates fresh, crisp orchard fruit notes followed by gentle smoke: a bold and complex single malt with remarkable balance and a uniquely Danish style of smokiness, often likened to a hot summer's day on the moor.
A New Nordic single malt that is rarely seen, it makes a distinctive gift for whisky lovers.
Sip it neat or with a drop of water.
Floor malting is the traditional method of germinating barley by spreading it across a malting floor and turning it by hand, a labour-intensive practice that only a handful of distilleries still follow.
Drying the malt over burning heather as well as peat gives a lighter, more floral smoke than peat alone, which is part of what sets Stauning's smoky style apart.
Direct-fired stills are heated by an open flame rather than steam, which can give the new spirit a fuller, richer character.
