Stonehouse Distillery Coconut Rum is a full-strength, 80-proof (40% ABV) rum from Winston, Montana, distilled from molasses in a copper pot still, matured in once-used bourbon barrels and infused with toasted organic coconut and vanilla.
Stonehouse is a small-batch craft distillery nestled at the base of the Elkhorn Mountains, with views of Canyon Ferry Lake. Founders John and Snezhi left their native Europe for Montana; John's family in Germany made clear grain spirits called Korn. The distillery handcrafts everything in-house on a traditional copper pot still made especially for it in Portugal.
Unlike most commercial coconut rums, which are low-proof and syrupy, this one is a real rum at full strength. Slow pot distillation and time in bourbon barrels give it genuine rum character, and the real toasted coconut and vanilla make it natural and bright rather than artificial. It is the closest you can get to the islands without leaving Montana.
The playful label makes it a fun gift.
Aged rum is one of the most diverse spirits in the world, shaped by the sugarcane, the still and the warm climates where it matures, which speed up the interaction between spirit and wood.
Coconut rum is a natural partner for pineapple, lime and cream, the building blocks of the piña colada and many tiki classics.
Pot stills make a heavier, more flavorful rum than column stills, keeping more of the character of the molasses.
Montana's Elkhorn Mountains rise just east of Helena, above the Missouri River and Canyon Ferry Lake.
