Teeling Small Batch is a blended Irish whiskey from Dublin's Teeling Whiskey Company, finished in Central American rum casks and bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV), non-chill filtered and full of natural character.
It challenges the convention of what an Irish whiskey can be, with layers of unique flavor shaped by unconventional cask maturation. Hand-selected casks of grain and malt whiskey are first fully aged in ex-bourbon barrels, then married together in Central American rum casks for up to 12 months, creating a unique dried-fruit profile.
Each step of the small-batch process involves more human interaction, from hand-selecting the casks to blending each batch to taste and finishing only in high-quality rum casks. The result is a high-malt blend that is triple distilled and bottled without chill filtration.
The nose is floral and herbal, with vanilla sweetness, rum-raisin notes and allspice. The palate brings creamy vanilla with dried fruit, raisin and apricot and a slight tingling spice, and the finish is long and warming, with lingering sweetness, spice and oak.
The Teeling name has been part of Dublin distilling since 1782, when Walter Teeling set up a craft distillery on Marrowbone Lane in the Liberties, then the epicenter of Irish distilling. Since 2012, brothers Jack and Stephen Teeling, the latest generation of Teeling whiskey makers, have been putting their own mark on Irish whiskey, and in 2015 they came full circle by opening the new Teeling Whiskey Distillery on Newmarket Square, just down the road from where the original family distillery once stood. It was the first new distillery in Dublin in almost 40 years, and the brand's phoenix rising from a pot still symbolizes that rebirth.
