Tenjaku Japanese Vodka is a premium rice vodka from Fuefuki in Yamanashi Prefecture, made from Yamada Nishiki rice and spring water, filtered through birch and bamboo charcoal and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Tenjaku is made by Minami Alps Wine & Beverage Co. in Fuefuki, in the fertile Misaka area of the Fuefuki Basin, the same house behind Tenjaku Whisky and Gin. Tenjaku is the Japanese name for the skylark, the much-loved herald of spring, and the vodka shares the brand's pursuit of a pure, clean flavor, with the red sun and bold calligraphy of its label.
It starts with Yamada Nishiki, the rice prized for premium sake, combining koji malt and polished rice in a technique drawn from Japanese brewing. The spirit is cut with the region's renowned natural spring water, drawn from 250 meters below the Misaka mountains near Mt. Fuji, and filtered through birch and bamboo charcoal. It earned 91 points and a Gold Medal from the Beverage Tasting Institute.
The nose is sweet, with a gentle white-rice character. The palate is clear, smooth, subtly sweet and round, with hints of steamed rice and citrus, and the finish is refreshing.
Serve it ice cold, mix a Japanese-style highball with soda and a lemon twist, or stir a crisp Martini. Its soft rice character pairs naturally with sushi, sashimi and tempura.
