Tenute Sella Lessona 2016 is a Lessona DOC red from northern Piedmont, made mainly from Nebbiolo with a little Vespolina, at 13.5% ABV.
Lessona's rules require at least 85% Nebbiolo, known locally as Spanna, with Vespolina and Uva Rara allowed for the rest.
The Vespolina's softer tannins mellow the young Nebbiolo, and the 2016 is now entering its drinking window.
Tenute Sella's Lessonas are savoury, flavourful and rich.
Expect red cherry, rose, dried herbs and mineral spice, an elegant alternative to Barolo.
Good wine rewards a little care in serving. Whites and rosés show best chilled to around 45 to 50°F, while reds are at their most expressive slightly below room temperature, around 60 to 65°F. Opening the bottle and letting it breathe for a few minutes, or pouring it into a decanter, helps the aromas open up.
