The Arran Malt Port Cask Finish is an island single malt Scotch whisky, matured for around eight years in traditional oak casks and then finished in Port casks, bottled at 50% ABV.
The Port casks were sourced from an artisan producer of the iconic Portuguese fortified wine, and the maturation was monitored under the watchful eye of Arran's Master Distiller to ensure the casks and the intrinsic character of The Arran Single Malt partnered perfectly. The result is full of charm and rich flavour, and a wonderful way to discover the Arran range.
The nose offers cinnamon and baked apples. The palate brings vanilla spice, ripe citrus, dried fruits and nuttiness, and a splash of water reveals more mandarin citrus with fudge and honeyed notes. The finish shows spice, bitter orange, chocolate and cherries.
A fine after-dinner dram, especially with a cheese selection, it makes an elegant gift.
Sip it neat, then add a splash of water.
Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks, and any age statement on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
The Isle of Arran sits in the Firth of Clyde off Scotland's west coast, and its distillery at Lochranza, opened in 1995, was the first legal distillery on the island in more than 150 years.
Port is a fortified red wine from Portugal's Douro Valley; casks that held it pass on red-fruit sweetness, plum and a gentle rosy hue to the whisky they finish.
Bottled at 50% ABV, this release keeps a fuller texture and more of the cask's character than a standard 40% bottling.
