The First Millionaire Sacramento Single Malt is an American single malt whiskey from Calistoga Depot Distillery, part of the Boisset Collection in California's Napa Valley. It is made from 100% malted barley grown in the Sacramento Valley and bottled at 93 proof (46.5% ABV).
The barley is locally sourced and meticulously malted, then the whiskey matures in freshly charred American white oak casks of about 70 gallons with a lighter char, built to the same standards as Boisset's wine barrels. The lighter char lets the malt speak while the new oak adds sweetness and structure.
The First Millionaire range is named for Samuel Brannan, who built a fortune selling mining equipment to miners during the Gold Rush and became the first millionaire in San Francisco. Brannan also founded Calistoga, home of the historic depot that gives the distillery its name.
The whiskey has won a Double Gold at the SIP Awards, Silver at the New York World Spirits Competition and Gold in The Fifty Best American Single Malt Whiskey. Its nose shows butterscotch, brioche and roasted chestnut; the palate opens brisk and drying with leather, oak, orange oil and espresso, with honey in the mid-palate; and the finish builds through baking spice to dark chocolate and pecan pie.
A splash of water makes it oilier and brings out vanilla and creamy caramel.
