The GlenDronach Port Wood is a ten-year-old Highland single malt Scotch whisky, matured in the distillery's sherry casks and then given a second maturation of three years in Port pipes from Portugal's Douro Valley, bottled at 46% ABV.
It is inspired by the historical import of casked port into Scotland during the 19th century, when port was de rigueur and many of the finest port pipes travelled from Portugal down the Douro River to the wine cellars of Scotland's gentry. GlenDronach, founded in 1826 by James Allardice, whose name still appears on the bottle, selected some of the Douro Valley's finest port pipes to house its whisky, and Master Blender Rachel Barrie combined the whisky from these casks.
The result is a fruit-filled ten-year-old, with layers of ripe berries rolling into GlenDronach's signature long, lingering finish.
Presented in its rich port-coloured livery, it makes an elegant gift.
Enjoy it neat or with a drop of water.
Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks, and any age statement on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
GlenDronach is known as one of the great sherried Highland malts: its spirit is traditionally matured in Spanish Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks, which give it a rich, fruity depth.
A Port pipe is a long, tapered cask used to age port wine in the Douro; after holding fortified red wine, the wood lends whisky red-fruit sweetness, a rosy hue and a gentle tannic grip.
Bottled at 46% ABV, the whisky keeps a fuller texture and more of the flavour of its casks than a standard 40% bottling.
