The Lost Explorer Espadín is a sustainable artisanal mezcal from San Pablo Huixtepec in Oaxaca's Valles Centrales, made from Espadín agave that grows for eight years before harvest and bottled at 84 proof (42% ABV).
The Lost Explorer was co-founded by David de Rothschild and Thor Björgólfsson in partnership with Maestro Mezcalero Don Fortino Ramos, who has 40 years of mezcal distilling experience. Each small batch is handcrafted with a sustainable approach in tune with the rhythms of nature, and the mezcal is double distilled.
A sweet and herbaceous expression, it is well balanced with hints of red apple and ripe fruit and a mild smoky layer to finish. The aroma brings fresh herbs with hints of wood from the fire pit; the taste shows chopped agave, mesquite, sweet red apple and ripe fruit; the finish is smooth and fruity with a slight smoked wood note.
The illustrated label makes it a handsome gift for mezcal newcomers and fans alike.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
