The Lost Explorer was co-founded by David de Rothschild and Thor Björgólfsson in partnership with Maestro Mezcalero Don Fortino Ramos, who makes the mezcal in San Pablo Huixtepec in the Valles Centrales of Oaxaca. The brand is committed to the sustainable production of high-quality, handcrafted mezcal.
Salmiana, known locally as maguey verde, is a large agave traditionally used to make pulque. It is one of agave's most resilient and expressive varieties, and here it is given twelve years of patient cultivation before harvest. The 12 on the label refers to the age of the agave: the mezcal itself is unaged, so its character comes straight from the plant and the craft.
This is the brand's most herbaceous expression of all, offering a sweet and spicy profile. On the nose, Salmiana expresses fresh green chili, vibrant grapefruit peel and agave after a rainfall. The citrus notes carry onto the palate with a sweet tint of dried herbs, leading to a spicy finish with even minerality.
