The Matsui Mizunara Cask is an award-winning Japanese single malt whisky from Kurayoshi Distillery, owned by Matsui Shuzo in Tottori Prefecture, matured in rare Japanese Mizunara oak casks and bottled at 48% ABV.
Mizunara, Japanese water oak, is notoriously difficult to cooper because of its porous structure, but it is highly prized for the distinct, exotic incense-like character it gives a spirit. The whisky is distilled from 100% malted barley.
The label features Katsushika Hokusai's masterpiece from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a fitting image for one of Japan's most celebrated woods.
Presented in its illustrated box, it is a beautiful gift for Japanese whisky lovers.
Enjoy it neat or with a drop of water.
Japanese whisky has earned a worldwide reputation for balance and precision, and limited releases from its historic distilleries are among the most sought-after bottles for collectors.
Japanese single malt is made from malted barley, distilled in pot stills and matured in wood, much like Scotch, and Japanese distillers are known for their precision. Mizunara casks are rare and costly because the wood is porous and prone to leaking, so whiskies matured in them are prized.
Kurayoshi sits in Tottori Prefecture on the Sea of Japan, near the slopes of Mount Daisen, whose soft water is used throughout production.
A drop of water helps open the sandalwood and incense notes that Mizunara is famous for.
