Town Branch 6 Year Wheated is a non-chill-filtered Kentucky straight bourbon from Town Branch Distillery in Lexington, made from a wheated mash bill and bottled at 99 proof (49.5% ABV).
Town Branch is the distilling side of Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co., the 7th member of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. First distilled in 2017, its wheated bourbon was carefully held back to build inventory, and the distillery waited eight years before introducing it as a nationwide core release. The mash bill is 70% corn, 22% wheat and 8% malted barley, and the whiskey matures at least six years in new #4-char American oak barrels. Head Distiller and Blender Dave Bob Gaspar has said six years is a sweet spot for the distillery's bourbons.
Replacing rye spice with a high share of wheat makes it softer, sweeter and more approachable, opening with oak and floral fruit, with the wheat bringing a gently sweet edge and six years in barrel adding depth and a rounded texture.
The teal Lexington label makes it a handsome gift for bourbon fans.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
Wheated bourbons are prized for their soft, gentle sweetness.
A splash of water softens the 99-proof strength.
