Tri Carragh Tamnavulin 12 Year Old is an independent single cask bottling of Speyside single malt, distilled on 4 August 2011, finished in a first-fill Pedro Ximénez sherry hogshead and bottled in 2024 at cask strength, 56.8% ABV. The run yielded only 314 bottles.
Tri Carragh is an independent label managed by Stravaig Spirits. The spirit spent over 11 years maturing in an oak cask before being re-racked in July 2023 into a first-fill PX hogshead for a nine-month finish. It is bottled at natural colour without chill filtration. Tamnavulin, established in 1966, takes its name from the Gaelic for mill on the hill.
The nose leans toward chocolate and citrus, and with water the whisky becomes much creamier and sweeter, with the PX finish adding dark, raisined sweetness to the Speyside malt.
The standing-stones label makes it a fine gift for collectors of independent bottlings.
Add a few drops of water to bring out its creamy sweetness.
Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks, and any age statement on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
A Pedro Ximénez finish is one of the richest a Scotch whisky can receive. PX is the sweetest style of sherry, made from sun-dried grapes, and a first-fill cask that has just been emptied of it passes on deep notes of raisin, fig and dark sugar. A short finish of a few months lets those flavours layer over the malt without masking the character of the distillery. Bottling at cask strength without chill filtration keeps the whisky's natural oils and texture intact.
