Tumbleroot Cane Vodka is a small-batch vodka distilled from sugarcane in Santa Fe, New Mexico, made by redistilling the heads and tails of the distillery's rum runs, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Tumbleroot was established in 2018 as a combined brewery and distillery in Santa Fe, making a wide variety of beer, spirits, liqueurs, bitters and canned cocktails from scratch. The woman-owned business features organic, garden-grown and wild-harvested ingredients, and its spirits are distilled from all-natural and organic base ingredients.
When distilling its rums, Tumbleroot uses only the hearts, the choicest cuts captured during the middle of a distillation run. That leaves the head and tail cuts, which are distilled again through the vodka still. Not only is this frugal, a practice their grandmothers would be proud of, it also creates a vodka of appreciable smoothness.
The result retains a hint of natural sweetness and sugarcane flavor, with a creamy body, clean and expressive of its cane base. Founders Jason and Angela bring the craft together: Jason studied culinary traditions around the world and worked in several breweries and distilleries, while Angela grows many of the ingredients and makes the ceramic vessels used in the taprooms. The vodka even stars in Tumbleroot's own canned mule, mixed with ginger, lime and a blend of spices.
Perfect in a spicy Moscow Mule with ginger and lime, it is best consumed while formulating new postulates of existential philosophy. It also makes a smooth Vodka Soda or Martini.
