Tumbleroot Navy Strength Gin is a bold, barrel-aged gin distilled from grain in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with a spice profile inspired by Indian chai, bottled at 114 proof (57% ABV).
Tumbleroot Brewery & Distillery was opened in 2018 by co-founders Jason Fitzpatrick and Jason Kirkman as a community-oriented taproom making all of its beer and spirits from scratch, using seasonal, garden-grown and wild-harvested ingredients that reflect Santa Fe. Its gins start from the distillery's own neutral spirit.
For the navy strength, the team set out to make a high-proof, barrel-aged gin that would be a versatile mixer and distinct from its other gins. As they combined flavors, they realized they were creating something like chai, so they used Indian tea as the template, with New Mexico juniper berries and warm spices. A rest in whiskey barrels keeps it dangerously smooth for its strength.
Each bottle is hand-numbered, making it a great gift for adventurous gin drinkers.
Navy strength gin is bottled at 57% ABV or higher, a tradition dating to the days when gin was stored aboard British naval ships alongside gunpowder.
Barrel-aging a gin softens the juniper and adds vanilla and spice from the wood.
Chai combines black tea with warming spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, ginger and clove, many of which are classic gin botanicals.
At this strength, gin stands up beautifully in a Negroni or a Gimlet, where dilution from ice opens the spice.
