Caledonian Dreaming is a 28-year-old single grain Scotch whisky from Loch Lomond distillery, bottled by the independent Uncharted Whisky Co. Distilled in 1996, it rested in a pair of bourbon casks for 28 years before being vatted and bottled in 2025 at natural cask strength, 48% ABV. Just 595 bottles were released, from cask reference UC046.
Loch Lomond is unusual among Scottish distilleries in producing both malt and grain whisky on one site, and its grain whisky is distilled in a continuous still. Nearly three decades in bourbon wood have given this one a gentle, creamy character. Single grain whiskies of this age are scarce, since most grain whisky is used young in blends, and long maturation turns their light spirit into something soft, round and dessert-like.
The nose brings cream soda, green apple, apple pie and vanilla ice cream. The palate is smooth and gentle, with apple pie and cream, and on the finish the fruit fades first as oak, clove and nutmeg come forward.
The ribbed bottle with its gold and green label is an elegant gift and a fine example of a well-aged single grain.
Sip it neat to savour its delicate, creamy profile.
Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks, and any age statement on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
