Volans Extra Añejo Limited Release No. 01 is a six-year-old extra añejo tequila, rested for six full years in used American white oak bourbon barrels and bottled at 43% ABV. As Limited Release No. 01, it is the first in Volans' series of limited releases.
The tequila is made at the El Pandillo distillery in the Jalisco Highlands, where the agave is crushed using a unique linear tahona and shredder process that keeps the agave fibres intact. Six years is a long time for tequila to spend in wood, far beyond the three-year minimum for the extra añejo category, and the bourbon barrels add rich layers without overwhelming the mature agave.
On the nose, mature agave meets the complexity that six years in bourbon barrels provide. The palate is full and layered, with blue weber agave wrapped in seasoned oak, vanilla and caramel, alongside floral, dried fruit, citrus, baking spice, chocolate and salty caramel notes balanced by mineral and cask character. The finish is long and elegant, with vanilla, oak and mature agave.
The squat, heavy bottle carries Volans' ornate black and silver emblem, and it is presented in a black box marked with the number 6 and Limited Release No. 01. It is a collector's tequila and a fine gift for anyone who appreciates long-aged agave spirits.
