Wahaka Espadín Joven is an artisanal mezcal from estate-grown, certified organic Espadín agave in San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca, made by maestro mezcalero Alberto "Beto" Morales and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).

The embodiment of traditional mezcal, Wahaka Espadín starts your mezcal adventure with a balance of smoke and sweetness. The agave is grown and tended exclusively on the Morales family estate in the district of Tlacolula and harvested after 7 to 8 years. It is cooked for 3 to 5 days in an earthen pit with ocote pine wood, crushed by tahona, fermented 10 to 12 days in pine vats with wild yeast and twice distilled in copper stills, with no aging.

A smoky nose leads to a sweet and savory palate: gentle, mildly herbal and fruit-filled, with minty sweetness, rainwater and slight earthiness.

The colorful folk-art label makes it a lovely gift.

Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.

Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
