The Hive is a small-batch blended malt Scotch whisky from Wemyss Malts with a Speyside core, named for its honeyed character. It is non-chill filtered and bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV) in a 700ml bottle.
Wemyss (pronounced Weems) Malts is the independent whisky house of the Wemyss family, whose ancestral seat, Wemyss Castle, has stood on the Fife cliffs for more than six centuries. The family names its blended malts after their flavour, and The Hive is meant for heather-honey fans. The recipe is about 62% light, sweet and soft Speyside single malts, 8% richly flavoured Speyside malt for support, and 30% fruity Speyside malt as the signature. It was relaunched in 2020 as a no-age-statement whisky.
On the nose comes a bouquet of florals and sticky blossom honey. Zesty orange and ginger tingle on the palate, and the finish is warm and zesty, with clove-spiked grapefruit.
Packed in its golden, honeycomb-patterned box, it is a cheerful gift. Enjoy it neat, on the rocks, or long as a Hive-Ball with cloudy lemonade and a wedge of lemon.
Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks, and any age statement on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
