Westland American Single Malt is the flagship whiskey of Seattle's Westland Distillery, made from a grain bill of five roasted and kilned barley malts and matured predominantly in new American oak. It is bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV) in a 700ml bottle.
Westland was founded in 2011 and moved in 2013 to its distillery in a restored crane factory in Seattle's SoDo neighborhood, where it pioneers American single malt and highlights locally grown and malted grain. Its flagship, introduced in late 2013, is the truest expression of the house style.
The base is always a locally grown pale malt, supported by specialty malts such as Munich, extra special and pale chocolate, a concept inspired by the Pacific Northwest's vibrant craft brewing culture. Belgian brewer's yeast adds fruity esters during fermentation. The whiskey opens with oak; with time and a splash of water, vanilla and cocoa come forward, finishing dry with lemon-pepper heat.
It is one of the first American single malts that tastes like Scotch yet is distinctly its own, and a fine gift.
