Westland Garryana 9th Edition is a limited annual release of American single malt from Seattle's Westland Distillery, matured partly in casks of native Garry oak (Quercus garryana) and bottled at 50% ABV. Just 6,600 bottles were released.
Part of Westland's Outpost Range, Garryana explores Pacific Northwest terroir through rare Garry oak. Edition 9 is built from Washington Select Pale, Munich, Extra Special, Pale Chocolate and Brown malts, matured for a minimum of 60 months in virgin Garry oak, first-fill ex-bourbon and first-fill ex-oloroso butts. It is the first Garryana to use oloroso sherry casks, balancing the savoury, heavily spiced, dark character of Garry oak with the fruit-forward, nutty notes of sherry.
The nose offers burnt marshmallow, biscuit, mocha and almond cream. The palate brings ground clove, cinnamon stick, a faint peppermint note and bread pudding.
The bold Outpost Range label makes it a sought-after gift for American single malt collectors.
Add a few drops of water to open it up.
American whiskey covers a wide range of styles, from bourbon and rye to single malts and light whiskeys, and independent blenders and small producers have made it one of the most exciting categories in spirits.
American single malt is made from 100% malted barley at a single distillery in the United States. Westland's use of several speciality malts, the same kinds brewers use for darker beers, adds roasted, chocolate and biscuit notes to the spirit before it ever reaches a cask.
