Westland Solum Edition 2 is a limited annual bottling of fifteen casks, distilled entirely from American peated malt from Skagit Valley Malting and aged 53 months in new American oak and ex-bourbon casks. It is bottled at 50% ABV.
Westland, in Seattle, has spent years exploring American peat, and Solum uses malt peated in Washington with peat from a bog about two hours south of the city. Its flavours trend toward the earthier end of peat, with moss, sage and lighter charred wood, a contrast to the medicinal smoke of many peated whiskies.
The nose brings rosemary bagel, dry tobacco, jasmine and sage. On the palate come brioche, vanilla glaze, fresh dill, green tea and burnt marshmallow, with damp Earl Grey, pine nuts, roasted pistachio and golden stone fruit.
The bold red and blue label makes it a distinctive gift for lovers of peated whisky.
Enjoy it neat or with a drop of water.
American whiskey covers a wide range of styles, from bourbon and rye to single malts and light whiskeys, and independent blenders and small producers have made it one of the most exciting categories in spirits.
Peat is partly decayed vegetation, and its character depends on where it forms; Scottish island peat is rich in seaweed and heather, while Washington's bog peat brings earthier, herbal notes. Solum is Latin for soil, a nod to how the land shapes the whisky.
