Westward Stout Cask is an American single malt whisky from Portland, Oregon, made from Westward Whiskey Original and then aged for a year in casks seasoned with stout, bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV).
For nearly a decade, Westward has traded its freshly emptied barrels with brewing collaborators, who season them with stout before returning them; breweries such as Breakside, Fort George, Ex Novo and Migration have taken part. Westward begins as a fermented ale, brewed from 100% malted barley with ale yeast, then distilled and matured in new American oak, and the stout finish pushes the boundaries of flavour while accentuating its signature toasty character.
The aroma brings hazelnut, honeycomb and roasted barley. The palate offers milk chocolate, banana and almond toffee, and the finish shows oaky vanilla, chocolate almond, mint and citrus.
A whisky with deep Pacific Northwest brewing roots, it makes a fine gift for whisky and craft beer lovers.
Sip it neat or with a drop of water.
American whiskey covers a wide range of styles, from bourbon and rye to single malts and light whiskeys, and independent blenders and small producers have made it one of the most exciting categories in spirits.
American single malt is made from 100% malted barley at a single distillery in the United States, distilled in pot stills and matured in oak.
Stout is a dark beer brewed with roasted malts; casks that held it pass on notes of coffee, cocoa and toasted grain to the whisky they finish.
Fermenting with ale yeast before distillation gives Westward a fruity, rich base, which the stout casks deepen with roast and chocolate.
